Honzuki no Gekokujou Episode 33

23 May, 2022

As usual, Myne’s past life as a bookworm in Japan doesn’t get much focus this week – but it does serve as an overriding motivation for why a peasant girl would be interested in books at all, and an explanation as to how this little girl is making so many strides towards making what were still luxury items in this time period.

Magic exists in the setting, but so do resource constraints, and this tension (along with a very down-to-Earth portrayal of medieval life) is what makes the overall series so fascinating.

In this episode, we learn that Dirk might be adopted because of his high magic level. And the high priest would surely choose the pliable baby over the hard-negotiating kid, so Myne must protect him.

We also get a nice scene comparing types of ink and a bit of teaching the orphans about book production. Overall, Honzuki no Gekokujou is still too much on the slow life side for my tastes, especially as I’m watching weekly, but there are still aspects which make it worth keeping up with.
